Welcome
I'd like to extend a warm welcome to all visitors. I'm Patrick Earl and since this is my site, as you might expect, it contains things related to me.
The picture above tells a lot about me. If you're curious to know more, click here.
Pictures
Taking pictures is one of the things I quite enjoy. Scattered around my site you'll find quite a few pictures I've taken.
On a very cold day this winter, a rabbit visited our yard. I took a few pictures of him and wrote a few of my thoughts here.
A recent project I had the pleasure of assisting in was An Edmonton Fairy Tale. Check it out if you're due for a laugh.
Although not on my site, I also photographed and annotated pictures of one of the camping trips I've been on. You can find them here. You can also find some pictures I took at Campus In The Foothills 2001.
Here's a list of the more sets of pictures I've taken:
And some older pictures:
Music
I write music in my spare time. Since I don't have a lot of spare time, most of my songs are rather unpolished, but you might have fun listening to them anyways. The volume level is not normalized so the first two songs are too quiet.
- More Than Me (Recorded July 6, 2008)
- A bit repetitive itself, this is the backing track for a better song called More Than Me created by the Profile band. At the moment I don't have a recording of the full song.
- Monoctopus (Recorded July 6, 2008)
- This one will sound best if you have a subwoofer or other sufficiently bassy speakers. Originally created for a coffee house a few years ago, the entirety of this song is played live with the assistance of layered sounds and an arpegiator. If it weren't for modern technology, it would take a skilled octopus to duplicate the sound of this song. Aside from the poor timing, there's a major mistake in the song near the end. Can you hear it?
- Shamifex
- This is a short, yet funky, tune with a Shamisen layered on top of various bass and pad tones. (There's a bit of distortion in the recording, but if you don't listen for it, you might not hear it.)
Electronics
Building electronic devices is another one of my hobbies. Here are some of the projects I've worked on.
- PIC Programming
- Programming PICs for the first time under Linux can be a challenge. If you're like me, maybe this information will help get you on the right track.
Projects & Portfolio
I've been involved in a number of projects over time. Here is a list of a few of them.
- Software Projects
- A number of small software projects which I have made available publicly.
- QuIRC
- An IRC client I spent a couple of years on. It was intended to fill my need for a Tcl/Tk based IRC client on par with the Windows client XiRCON. It surpased my intentions and ended up as an excellent extensible client for power users.
- Great Hold-Ups Inc.
- A company I do ongoing web design and development for. I recently implemented a secure shopping cart system on their site.
- Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship
- I developed the look for the site as well as the macros that simplify the site maintenance.
- iSource
- This site was developed for a school marketing project as a concept site for the Computer Book Source here in Edmonton. It contains a fully functional book and software database as well as a working shopping cart (minus the checkout procedure). The majority of the site was developed in just a few days using Zope.
- E-Intermart Inc.
- I do system admin work for E-Intermart. I've done a fair amount of Zope coding while working on projects for them.
- Therapy Afterhours
- I co-developed the message forum for this site with Kenneth Chui. The site has since been taken down.
